1. He is a fraternity brother. 他是兄弟会的一员。

在学校内有很多写著希腊字母的宿舍，这些可不是数学系的系馆喔。那是兄弟会的家。兄弟会其实算是宿舍的一种，住在这里不见得会比较便宜，但是可以认识很多人还有参加不完的活动和party，还有喝不完的酒。兄弟会全是男生，可是每个兄弟会可以选一个女生当作sweetheart，这可是一种荣誉。有空去看看他们的网页，你就可以看到万丛绿中一点红。

2. She is a sorority sister. 她是姐妹会的成员。

男生是兄弟会，女生就是姐妹会了。在男生多的学校里，sorority 大概就跟台大的女生宿舍一样地吸引众人的目光吧。尤其是每年秋天，他们都会招收新会员(Fall rush)，所有的人都会站在门口迎接新生，场面好不壮观!

3. I am returning this book. 我想要还这本书。

借书叫borrow a book，还书是return a book，不过有趣的是，他们不会说"I return the book."，而会说"I am returning this book." 因为事实上现在进行式有未来的意思在里面，所以这句话就等于"I will return this book."

4. I want to renew this book 我想续借我的书。

Renew 就是“续借”的意思。比如说你去图书馆借了一本书，书到期了但是你还想继续借这本书，你就可以说"I want to renew this book." 任何固定时间一到要去换约我们都叫renew。例如你的汽车牌照过期了，或是你的保单到期了要去更新或是中文里讲的续约，也是用renew. 比如说，"I want to renew my car insurance for this coming year. "

5. I just bought a brand new car. 我买了一辆新车。

Brand new 感觉上比new 还要来的更新一点。凡是全新，刚出厂的东西叫brand new，可能是说连商标(brand) 都还在上面的意思吧!

6. He is really a tough guy; he takes no prisoner. 他很严格，手下绝不留情。

这是我听老美形容他们教授的，就是说他们教授很严格，而且绝不留活口(就像台湾说的大刀，挂人无数)。所谓takes no prisoner指的是战争时不收战俘，抓到全部杀死的意思，也就是说够狠。

老美常用tough 来形容一件事情的困难或是一个人的强硬态度，例如，"Today is a tough day for me." 就是说今天过得很不容易啦。要是说"The professor is tough." 则是说这个教授教课很严格，很不好混的意思。要是别人遇到这种tough 的教授，你就可以鼓励他，"Tough it out!" 就是说把它撑过去。

同样地，这句话你也可以说成"The professor goes for kill." 就是说这个教授支持杀戮，下手绝不留情。

7. It's a cake course. 这门课很容易过。

我们说一门课很好修，就用cake course 这个字，或是只说It's a cake，别人也是会了解的。还有我听一个从柏克莱大学来的学生说，他们把很好修的课程叫Micky Mouse，很有趣吧? 大家参考参考。

8. Which department is she in? 她是哪一个系的?

我们都知道主修是用major 这个字，简单地问法就是，"What's your major?" 但是你也可以用which field 或是which department 来代替。比如说有人来演讲，你想知道他是什么系的教授，你就可以问"Which department is she in?" 或是"Which field is she in?" 还有一种最口语问主修的问法，就是问人家"What are you studying?" 就可以了。

9. Is there any way we can move it? 我们有没有办法换个地方?

Way 就是办法，你可以说，"Is there some other way...?" 就是有没有其它的办法。move it 可以指很多事，如换教室，换地点，都可以用move，不要再说change place 了。这是有一次老师宣布在某间教室考试，可是因为那间教室平时就很吵，所以我的同学就举手说，"Is there any way we can move it?"

 支持这样的做法的理由：older teenage children还不够成熟(immature)，考虑不够周全(inconsiderate)，尤其涉及到经济相关的决定时，缺乏独立承担能力(incapable of being independent)。  然而，“如何保证parents或者adult relatives所作的决定就是正确的”也是个问题。



另外，总是把孩子排除在决定权之外，是否会使孩子变得“没能力做出任何决定”?the ability to make sound decision是人生道路上很重要的能力之一。

In my point of view, good parent should have several crucial characters. First and the foremost, they have responsibility. They consider it is their responsible to look after the kids and lead them to the right way. They care everything about the kids. Secondly, they must be very patient, and have good temper. They know how to control themselves when they are angry, and teach the kids patiently. It is very important because their temple and attitude to their kids will influence them a lot in the rest of life. At last, they should understand the difference between two generations. That means they can tolerate the kids when they do something new and the parents should allow for this.

I think it‟s very important for a parent to be honest, supportive and understanding. First, honesty is a crucial character for a good parent because being honest will set a good example for the children. When I was little, I once skipped classes to play and cheated my parents when I got home. My father scolded me and told me stories about honesty for 3 hours, and I believe I have learned a lot from him. Also, being supportive is important for a parent too. Even though parents might not always be able to help the children academically or financially, still, they may always support their children mentally. Last but certainly not the least, understanding. As known to all, there is a so-called generation gap which makes it difficult for the effective communication between parents and children. But I believe with more understanding of the younger generation‟s life style, parents will gain more respect from the children, and the family atmosphere will be filled with happiness and joy.
